From lush green valleys to picturesque lakes and snow-capped mountain peaks, Pakistan is home to some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the world, which is why it attracts a large number of tourists every year.

To capitalise on this opportunity and expand the tourism sector in the country, the government has introduced many noteworthy initiatives on both national and provincial levels in the last few years. The announcement of a multi-million rupee ‘tourism expressway’ is yet another major achievement in this regard.

With a total budget of millions of rupees, the federal government has come up with a comprehensive plan to work on a 123-km-long expressway project. The primary purpose of this infrastructural update in the network of highways in the country is to make tourism sites easily accessible.

Here are all the latest updates on the upcoming tourism expressway proposed by the government including its route and development scope.

A state-of-the-art ‘tourism expressway’ has been planned between Rawalpindi and Muzaffarabad, AJK

The upcoming ‘tourism expressway’ is going to stretch from Rawalpindi to Murree — and further up to Muzaffarabad, AJK. The road will serve as an alternative route between some of the key destinations in the region. It will pass through Murree, Kotli Sattian, Kahuta, and Kallar Syedan and would primarily be used by tourists.

Propose Length and Width of the Upcoming Tourism Highway

According to the key officials working on the project, a section of the existing highway, which stretches 123 kilometres, would be reconstructed and widened from 13 feet to probably up to 24 feet. This means while the length of the road would remain the same, its width would almost be doubled to ease traffic flow.

Key Developments in the Surrounding Areas of the Expressway

The beauty of the expressway will be enhanced by greenbelts and parks with fruit-bearing trees in its surroundings

As claimed by the official sources, the expressway would be surrounded by scattered metropolitan areas containing plazas, hotels, resorts, commercial buildings, factories, markets, hospitals, and educational institutions.

Greenbelts and large parks with fruit-bearing trees would also be set up along the expressway to uplift its beauty, allowing tourists to enjoy a pleasurable travelling experience. There would also be fully-equipped stopovers and rest areas to facilitate the travellers on the highway.

Total Construction Cost of the Tourism Highway

According to the official figures released by the federal government, the construction of this tourism highway in Pakistan would cost around PKR 4.5 billion. Stretching more than a hundred kilometres, it is a large-scale project, which needs proper survey, planning, and development strategies. The construction work on this highway project is also expected to begin soon.

More About Highways and Motorways in Pakistan

Starting from Karakoram Highway near the China-Pakistan border in the north and going all the way to deep seaports of the country in the south, the advanced network of motorways and highways connect all the major trade and tourism destinations. The strategic location of Pakistan greatly adds to its regional importance, which is one of the major factors why it has become a key player in China’s Belt Road Initiative (BRI) — locally known as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Under the banner of CPEC, many groundbreaking infrastructure projects have been recently introduced to improve connectivity in the country. M-15 Hazara Motorway, Hakla-DI Khan Motorway are among some of the most noteworthy developments in this regard.
