UNON Conference Facilities in Kenya Set For Upgrade

The conference facilities at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), the UN headquarters in Africa, are set to undergo a major renovation and expansion. The project is currently in the design phase.
In September, UNON awarded a design services contract to Boogertman + Partners of South Africa for the expansion of its conference facilities in Kenya. The multi-disciplinary architectural firm is working with Switzerland’s Herzog & de Meuron World as co-design consultants, the local Howard Humphreys East Africa as building services, civil and structural engineers, and MACE YMR, also local, for project management and quantity surveying services.
The project will modernise and expand the conference facilities and transform the public-facing portion of the 56-hectare UNON Gigiri campus.
The upgraded conference facilities will accommodate about 9,000 in-person conference participants, up from 2,000 currently, and will comprise 24 conference and meeting rooms of various sizes, a new visitor centre and delegate registration building, a new media centre, dining and multi-purpose exhibition buildings, and the gut renovation of the existing facilities. The upgraded conference facilities will aim for net zero energy consumption.
The construction will occur over three phases, beginning in 2025 and ending in 2029. Meetings and other activities will continue to be accommodated by UNON throughout the project implementation period.
According to local media, the cost of the project has been estimated at US$268 million.
The UN facilities in Kenya were initially established in 1974.
The Renovation and Expansion of the Conference Facility Project is intended to meet the conferencing requirements of the organisation over the next 25-30 years.
In January, UNON invited expressions of interest to provide programme management consultancy services for the project. The PMC will serve as an extension to the UNON internal dedicated project management team. The deadline for submissions was 16 February.
