Tanzania Kicks Off Mbamba Bay Port Upgrade

Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has officially launched the upgrade and expansion of Mbamba Bay port, the local Daily News has reported.
Mbamba Bay port is one of three ports located on Lake Nyasa in Tanzania’s Ruvuma region.
TPA handed over the project to Anova Consulting Company on 27 January, Daily News said.
The authority signed the construction contract for the lake port with China’s Xiamen Ongoing Construction Group in early January.
The project will be completed within 24 months at a cost of Tanzanian shilling 80.85 billion (US$31.8 million).
The Mbamba Bay port is part of the Mtwara transport corridor, which links to the deepwater Port of Mtwara in the south and facilitates trade with Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia.
Following the upgrade, it will become the largest port on Lake Nyasa. According to Daily News its annual cargo handling capacity will rise from 35,000 tonnes currently to 320,000 tonnes.
