Ghana Commissions First Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Centre

[ad_1]

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the newly constructed Eastern Regional Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Centre (MYRC) and sports stadium in Koforidua, located in the country’s Eastern region.
The 5,000-seater facility is the first of 10 such facilities being constructed in phases in Ghana’s former regional capitals as the country prepares to host the 13th African Games in March 2024.
The Ministry of Youth & Sports and the National Youth Authority completed the sod-cutting ceremony for the MYRCs in 2018.
The Koforidua facility is part of the first phase of the MYRC programme along with five other completed centres – located in Wa in the Upper West region, Ho in the Volta region, Axim in the Western region, Dormaa in the Bono region and Dunkwa-on-Ofin in the Central region. These centres are planned to be commissioned and handed over for use in the following months.
The second phase will comprise four MYRCs including the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in North Kaneshie in the Greater Accra region, Navrongo in the Upper East region, Yendi in the Northern region and Nyinahin in the Ashanti region.
President Akufo-Addo directed the allocation of funds for the completion of the second-phase projects during the commissioning of the Koforidua MYRC. The government plans to commission the remaining centres by 2024.

The sporting facilities of the MYRCs include:

A FIFA-standard football pitch;
An 8-lane Olympic-size running track;
Four spectator stands including a VIP stand that can host 5,000 spectators;
A tennis court;
A multi-purpose court;
A gymnasium;
A hall for indoor games and activities;

The non-sporting facilities of the MYRCs include:

A mentoring, coaching and counselling centre;
An ICT hub;
A business incubation and entrepreneurship hub;
A youth clinic;
Hostel facilities at selected centres;
A restaurant;
A Hall of Fame parlour;
Entrances and ticketing booths;
Car parks;
Storm drains.

“This is a huge step in the youth capacity development agenda of our great nation,” said President Akufo-Addo at the commissioning of the Koforidua centre on 27 December. “It is an impetus for progress and growth, including building social capital, stimulating economic development and facilitating employment opportunities for our youth.”
The MYRC programme is part of various investments made by the Ghanaian government in the sports sector, including the construction of 152 artificial turf pitches across the country and the renovation of national stadia in Cape Coast, Kumasi, Accra and Sekondi.
