Sometimes people don’t go looking for homes when they need to move to a new place. Instead, they prefer building one according to their requirements. You can also explore which option suits you by reading our in-depth analysis of the constructing vs. buying a home debate. In case you have already decided to construct a house, then this piece will surely help you out as we’re going to discuss different types of building materials used in Pakistan.

Let’s begin!

MOST POPULAR BUILDING MATERIALS USED IN PAKISTAN

When it comes to choosing construction materials for a building, different factors come into play. Consider aesthetic appeal, material availability, initial and maintenance cost and durability. Let’s take a look at the most commonly-used natural and synthetic construction materials in Pakistan.

  • Cement
  • Sand
  • Steel
  • Concrete
  • Glass
  • Wood
  • Brick
  • Stone

CEMENT

Cement is one of the most popular building materials used in pakistan

Cement is used for structural purposes and serves as a binding agent for other building materials

Cement is one of the most important construction materials used in Pakistan. It is used for structural purposes and serves as a binding agent for other building materials like bricks, tiles and concrete blocks. Cement is available in a variety of types among which the most popular ones are listed below:

  • Natural Cement
  • Blast Furnace Cement
  • Portland Cement
  • Quick Setting Cement
  • Coloured Cement
  • Rapid Hardening Cement
  • Sulphate Resisting Cement (SRC)
  • White Portland Cement
  • High Alumina Cement

All these types of cement have specific purposes and are categorised according to the type of construction in which they are used. Weather condition is also one of the most important things to consider when selecting a type of cement for a construction project.

Current Rate of Cement: PKR 600 per bag

SAND

Sand plays a key role in construction. When mixed with soil, it helps to lay strong foundations for buildings of different shapes and sizes. Moreover, it is also used in mortar, which is a mixture of water, cement and sand. It also acts as a highly important component in the making of concrete.

Sand that is used for construction needs to be free from alkaline salt because it may potentially damage the masonry work in a building. Another thing to bear in mind is that the sand in the region of Southern Punjab in Pakistan has sand that contains sulphate ions, which makes it inappropriate for construction. Sulphate ions may cause damage beyond repairs to the concrete and mortar used in construction.

Current Rate of Sand: PKR 18 per cubic feet

STEEL

Steel is a rugged material used in structural framework

Steel is mostly used for pillar, beam and roof constructions

One of the most common types of metals used for construction purposes in Pakistan is steel. Rebar, which is a steel reinforcing bar, is used for supporting concrete structure under tension to make it long-lasting. Though concrete is strong enough to withstand forces trying to compress it, but adding rebar to it significantly increases the durability of a structure.

Steel is mostly used in a structural framework of a building such as a pillar, beam and roof constructions. To protect structural foundations from moisture and rust, builders use stainless steel containing some percentage of chromium, which makes it resistant to corrossion.

Current Rate of Steel Rebar: PKR 125,000 per tonne

CONCRETE

Concrete is known as a composite building material since it is a mixture of gravel/lime, cement and water. Due to its formidability and longevity, concrete is one of the most popular building materials used in Pakistan. However, it has a low tensile strength for which steel rods and bars are typically used in order to build a reinforced concrete structure. Below are the different types of concrete used for laying the foundation and structuring a building.

  • Plain Cement Concrete (PCC)
  • Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC)
  • Reinforced Brick Concrete (RBC)
  • Prestressed Concrete
  • Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC)
  • Lime Concrete
  • Cement Concrete
  • Sulphur Infiltrated Concrete
  • High Early Strength Concrete
  • Polymer Concrete
  • Waterproof Concrete

Current Rate of Concrete: PKR 50 to 55 per block

GLASS

Glass is a widely used construction material in Pakistan

Glass is a transparent glazing construction material, which can can significantly uplift your building’s aesthetic

Made from a mixture of silicate and brittle sand, glass serves as a transparent and translucent construction material that can be given any shape. Moreover, it is widely used as a transparent glazing construction material, which has a wide range of architectural applications. Nowadays, glass is used for making windows, doors and partitions. Unlike other construction material, glass has the ability to transmit, absorb or refract light. These characteristics can significantly uplift your building’s aesthetic.

Current Rate of Glass (without tempering): Starting at PKR 550 per 12 mm

WOOD

Wood is a widely-used construction material since it is hygroscopic in nature, which means it absorbs moisture in the air to maintain a pleasant environment indoors. In Pakistan, wood is used to construct walls, doors and windows. Moreover, it is also used for roofing purposes in certain regions, mostly in northern areas of the country.

Hardwoods like oak, maple, deodar, mahogany and teak are typically used in the construction of the ceiling, walls and floors. On the other hand softwoods like hickory, ash, beech, birch, pine and cedar are used to make doors and windows.

Current Rate of Deodar (Diyar) Hardwood: PKR 6,500 per cubic feet

BRICK

Brick is used in different types of structural constructions in pakistan

Brick is a purely inorganic construction material, which absorbs humidity better than all the other types of materials

Clay bricks are a staple when it comes to building materials used in Pakistan. The clay generally consists of silica and alumina mixed with magnesia and iron in varying amounts. Bricks are used in making walls, pavements and other types of masonry work in a building.

One of the main reasons behind the popularity of bricks as a key construction material is that it is purely inorganic and absorbs humidity better than all the other types of materials. It also minimises the risk of dust mites and mildew in a building.

Current Rate of Brick: PKR 10 per piece

STONE

In order to give a structure more power and strength to withstand the toughest of conditions, the use of stone in the base structure is usually recommended by experts. Stone has more durability level than any other construction material. Stone is being used for construction since ancient times. Pyramids of Giza and different types of stone structures built by the Romans in Europe are some of the finest examples in this regard.

The most popular types of stone used in construction are granite, limestone and marble. Along with assuring the permanency of a structure, stones are also used to decorate floors and walls, for which marble is most commonly used in the form of tiles and blocks.

Current Rate of Marble (Type of Stone Used in Construction): PKR 40 to 65 per square feet

These were some of the most popular types of building materials used in Pakistan along with their current rates. You might also be interested in taking a look at our blog giving you an estimate of a 5 marla house construction cost.
